Healthy nourishing food that leaves you feeling fabulous doesn’t have to be dull, complicated or expensive!

Healthy, cheap & delicious! Personal Trainer Gen Levrant Southampton

We’ve been educated to believe fat is bad, salads are boring and healthy foods require tonnes of preparation we simply do not have time for.

Thankfully the opposite is true. Often the simplest combination of ingredients work and taste the best, leaving you satisfied and nourished from the inside out. Here’s four of my favourites and why I eat them every day.

Chia seeds
These bad boys contain more omega 3 fats than salmon and more calcium than whole milk! They provide complete protein, a range of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals and are high in both soluble and insoluble fibre.

I put them in smoothies, as when mixed with liquids chia seeds swell up to 10 times their size, creating a filling gel-like substance. This assists digestion and reduces cravings which is why I love them!

Nutritional yeast
These are essentially deactivated yeast flakes that contain B vitamins and protein. Vegan, gluten and sugar free, they add a lovely cheesy nutty taste to dishes like homemade hummus and make yummy salad dressings.

Many of my clients have found them an absolute God-send as a cheese substitute in savoury dishes!

Coconut oil
The only oil I cook with, as it contains a lot of medium chain triglycerides (GOOD fats!) that have been shown to increase 24 hour energy expenditure by as much as 5%. This could potentially lead to significant long-term weight loss. These triglycerides have also been found to have therapeutic effects on several brain disorders.

Coconut oil: one of the best fats in the world

The Tokelauan population in the South Pacific eat over 60% of their calories from coconuts, making them the biggest consumers of saturated fat in the world. Funnily enough, they are in excellent health with no evidence of heart disease!

Raw cacao
The healthy, unprocessed aspect of chocolate without the sugar and dairy!

This beautiful, antioxidant-rich food lowers your blood pressure, chances of heart disease and stroke and boosts your mood, creating a sense of well-being without a “crash.” I love it in protein shakes and it makes exceptional raw chocolate desserts!
